Keratin treatment works by sealing the hair cuticle. This is what gives you that smooth, frizz-free finish. But a sealed cuticle is exactly what makes colouring difficult — hair dye needs to penetrate the cuticle to deposit pigment, and a freshly sealed cuticle resists that penetration.
If you colour too soon after keratin treatment, two things happen. First, the dye cannot penetrate evenly, resulting in patchy or faded colour. Second, the chemicals in the dye — particularly ammonia — can strip the keratin coating, undoing your smoothing results.
Waiting a minimum of 2 weeks (ideally 3) gives the keratin layer time to settle. By that point, the cuticle has relaxed enough to accept colour without destroying the keratin bond.

The best approach is to colour your hair first, wait 1 to 2 weeks for the colour to settle, and then apply your keratin treatment. This order gives you the best of both worlds.

Apply your permanent colour, highlights, balayage, or toner as normal. Allow the colour to settle for 1 to 2 weeks before your keratin treatment appointment.

Apply keratin treatment
The keratin treatment seals the cuticle over the freshly deposited colour. This locks the pigment in, making your colour last significantly longer than it would on its own.
Step 3
Maintain with sulfate-free care
Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to preserve both the keratin coating and your colour. Sulfates strip both — so avoiding them is essential for longevity.

Sometimes colouring before keratin is not practical — your roots are showing, or your colour appointment was already booked. If you need to dye after your keratin treatment, follow these rules to protect your smoothing results.
Wait at least 2 weeks
This is non-negotiable. Colouring within the first 2 weeks will almost certainly compromise your keratin coating. Three weeks is better.
Use ammonia-free dye
Ammonia forces the cuticle open aggressively, which strips the keratin layer. Ammonia-free or demi-permanent dyes are gentler and less likely to damage your smoothing results.
Skip the clarifying shampoo
Do not use a clarifying or deep-cleansing shampoo before colouring. These strip the keratin coating. Use your regular sulfate-free shampoo instead.
Use sulfate-free aftercare
After colouring, continue with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Sulfates accelerate colour fade and keratin breakdown.
Avoid bleach if possible
Bleach and lighteners are the most damaging to keratin coatings. If you need highlights, ask your colourist to use a gentle, low-volume developer.
